Try Using Food to Boost Your Mood
In general, people have been trained to believe that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and should be avoided. Sometimes, if the comfort food is a sugary food or another junk food, this is true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be completely nourishing and it’s good for you to consume them. There are several foods that really can boost your moods when you consume them. If you feel a little bit down and you’re in need of a happiness pick me up, try a couple of these.
Eggs, you might be amazed to find out, are wonderful at fighting depression. Just make sure that you do not throw out the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that is the most crucial in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the yolks especially, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can really help you raise your mood. This is because the B vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Try to eat an egg and feel a lot happier!
Make a few trail mix of nuts or seeds. Your mood can be elevated by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and so on. This is possible because these foods are high in magnesium which increases serotonin production. Serotonin is known as the “feel good” chemical and it tells your brain how you should be feeling all the time. The more you have of it, the better you will feel. Not just that but nuts, specifically, are a great source of protein.
If you want to overcome depression, you should eat some cold water fish. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, etcetera, they’re all loaded with omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that actually help the grey matter in your brain work a lot better. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can basically help you fight depression.
Grains can be excellent for driving away a terrible mood. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all truly great for helping raise your happiness levels. They help you feel full also which can actually help to better your mood. Feeling starved can actually make you feel terrible! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are not difficult for your stomach to digest. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps raise your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, raises your mood.
Green tea is wonderful for moods. You knew green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is high in a specific amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Research has discovered that this amino acid stimulates the production of brain waves. This helps raise your mental acuity while calming the rest of your body. You knew that green tea helps you become better. Now you know that green tea can improve your mood too!
So you see, you don’t need junk food or foods that are terrible for you just so to feel better! Try these tips instead!
