Turn to Food to Improve Your Mood

For the most part, people have been conditioned to believe that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and should be avoided. If your comfort food is candy or junk food this is true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be totally healthy and it’s good for you to consume them. There are some foods that actually can improve your moods when you eat them. If you seem to be a little bit down and you need an emotional pick me up, try several of these.

Eggs, you might be amazed to learn, are wonderful at battling depression. Just make sure that you do not throw out the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that is the most crucial in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, especially the yolks, are loaded with B vitamins. These B vitamins are great for helping to boost your mood. This is because these vitamins improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Eat an egg and feel a lot better!

Make a trail mixout of various seeds and nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etcetera are all great for elevating your mood. This is because these foods are rich in magnesium, which helps to increase serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that dictates to your brain how you feel day in and day out. The more of this chemical in your brain, the more pleasant you’ll feel. Not just that, nuts, particularly, are a fantastic protein source.

If you want to beat depression, try consuming some cold water fish. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all full of omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. These are two substances that boost the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can seriously raise your mood.

It’s not difficult to overcome your bad mood when you eat grains. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are terrific at helping you feel better. These grains fill you up better and that can help improve your moods too. Feeling starved can be awful! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are not difficult for your body to digest and process. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps jumpstart a rise in your blood sugar which in turn kicks up your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is truly good for your mood. You were just waiting to read that in this article, weren’t you? Green tea is found to be chock-full of an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies prove that this specific amino acid can actually stimulate brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while at the same time making the rest of your body more relaxed. You likely already knew it is not hard to be healthy when you drink green tea. Now you know green tea can help improve your mood as well!

As you can see, you don’t have to turn to junk food or foods that are not good for you so you can feel better! Try some of these tips instead.
