Learn How to Elevate Your Mood with Food

Mostly, people have been taught to believe that “comfort” foods are not good for the body and should be avoided. Often, if your comfort food is a sugary food or some other junk food, this holds true. Otherwise, comfort foods may be very nourishing and good for you. Some foods honestly do improve your mood when you consume them. If you are feeling a little bit down and you’re in need of a happiness pick me up, try a couple of these.

Eggs, you may be astonished to discover, are terrific at fighting depression. You must be sure, though, that what you make includes the egg yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, the egg yolks especially, are loaded with B vitamins. B vitamins can be great for raising your mood. This is because they help in improving the function of your neural transmitters, the components of your brain that control your mood. Consume an egg and cheer up!

Build a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be elevated by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera. This is possible since these foods have a bunch of magnesium which promotes your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that dictates to your brain how you feel all the time. The more you have of it, the more pleasant you will feel. Nuts, on top of improving your mood, can be a super source of protein.

Cold water fish are great if you would like to feel better. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, etcetera, they’re all loaded with omega-3s and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that truly help the grey matter in your brain work a lot better. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can earnestly elevate your mood.

It’s easy to drive away your bad mood when you consume grains. Barley, quinoa, millet, teff, etc are all good for helping you be in a happier state of mind. They help you feel full also which can really help to improve your mood. Feeling starved can actually bring you down! These grains can improve your mood as it’s not at all difficult for your body to digest them. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.

Green tea is excellent for moods. You knew green tea had to be included in this article, right? Green tea is rich in a specific amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies show that this particular amino acid can actually induce brain waves. This helps raise your mental focus while having a relaxing effect on the rest of your body. You probably already knew how easy it is to become healthy when you drink green tea. And now you know it can help you be happier too!

Now you realize that junk food isn’t necessarily what you need to eat when you are wanting to help your moods get better. Try a few of these instead!
